"The bathroom" shows an intimate moment of cleaning in oriental surroundings. Jean Leon Gerome has traveled the Orient and captured in numerous, detailed paintings. Even in this scene, the viewer is immediately drawn to the simple intimacy of the scene.

You can see two women. One sits on a stool. She is fair-skinned, naked, her head lowered. We see her from the back, so that this woman is not completely exposed to the eyes of the beholder. On the right side, moved out of the picture center, we see a colored servant girl. This is at least partially wrapped in colorful robes, on the head she wears a colorful cloth. Its oriental character is underlined by silver hoops on the arms and ankles.
The servant gently holds the outstretched right arm of the fair-skinned woman in her hand. She has just lathered the back of the other woman and will clean it the next moment. But for what? Is not this women's group an idyllic painting, as it may seem at first sight? Is the naked woman a prisoner, shall she be brought to the pasha's harem? Her inclination, almost devoted to her fate, might allow this conclusion.
At the same time it can be stated: Both women are relaxed, a harmonious unity. The seated naked woman looks like stone carved. She has her feet crossed and seems to thoroughly enjoy the bath. Colorful, lush and harmonious, the artist also creates the ambience. The room, which is closed on all sides, is beautifully furnished. On the left is a beautiful stone carved fountain, turquoise tiles, and huge Arabic characters decorate the walls. There is silence here.

A colorful highlight is the orange towel. With flowing drapery it has slid on the right side of the wooden bench on the smooth marble floor.
"The bathroom" is a work of art that equally radiates calm and raises questions. The painter leaves us in the dark about whether he wants to show harmony or criticism.
