With his painting "The Runners of Pascha", Jean Leon Gerome transports us to the lush world of the Orient. At first glance, the work infatuates through its powerful dynamics and the radiant light: deep blue is the sky. The running men stand out in detail and clearly from the striped city wall and the tower. Here, the eye has much to see, and undoubtedly the two runners are the protagonists of the action. Her attitude conveys speed, precision and body control.
Like arrows, the two dark-skinned men seem to fly past the observer out of the picture. Your job is to announce the Pasha. But this takes a marginal role in this painting: In a restful posture, he sits on a white horse, trotting slowly out of the city gate in contrast to the two runners.

The two runners act in lockstep. Both are captured in a moment where they stand on tiptoe like a ballerina. While the front man holds a tail behind his neck to keep his balance, the other runner's arms are in dynamic motion. This activity continues all the way to the clothes: beautifully the colorful sashes flutter in glistening sunlight. Like the harem pants and turbans, they paint exact shadows on the stony ground. This is different from the way in which the Pasha rides with his troupe. This reinforces the contrast between calmness and speed, order and near-animal energy.

The powerful running of the two men is underpinned by the dignified tranquility emanating from the city gate and the wall. Although the wall has already lost some bricks, the beauty and regularity with which it has been visually designed by humans gives it dignity and firmness. To the left and right, gray houses stick out behind this wall. The viewer recognizes: Here in the everyday life takes place!
The intense colors, the play of light and shadow as well as the powerful vitality depicted make this picture a masterpiece.
