Art of the 20th century

Why paint at all, when camera and film take over the recording? On this question the twentieth century worked itself out, and the answers came out as differently as never before. Between radical refusal of the object and defiant loyalty to it lay a wide field.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp belonged in Zurich to the circle of the Dada movement and early developed a serene geometric abstraction. Francis Cadell brought, as one of the Scottish Colourists, the light of the French moderns to Edinburgh, Anton Kolig wrestled in Austria for an expressive image of the human being. Others remained deliberately with storytelling: George Clausen painted English country life in mild open-air light, Nikolai Astrup printed and painted the fjord landscape of his Norwegian homeland in a colouring all his own.

A modernity of its own arose, moreover, in the book and the single sheet. John Bauer determined around 1910 for generations what Swedish trolls and forests look like, N. C. Wyeth painted the pictures for Stevenson's Treasure Island in 1911. Eric Ravilious joined wood engraving and watercolour in England into a cool, clear pictorial language, before he lost his life in war service in 1942 on a flight off Iceland. That the draughtsman of a world of cats like Louis Wain also has his place here belongs to the century: the old separation of high and popular pictorial art no longer held.
