Painting Frames "Nanna" |

| Nanna – A wide gold frame, 90 mm wide as seen, 48 mm high. The moulding rises from the rebate in a shallow groove and slopes down towards the outer edge in a gentle curve. An acanthus relief runs across the entire surface, leaf by leaf, with the direction of the pattern reversing at the corners. On the inside, directly along the rebate, runs a narrow band of leaves tapering to a point. The colour is a warm antique gold, overlaid with a dark, speckled patina. In raking light, the ridges of the leaves catch the gold, whilst the recesses remain brownish – this lends the surface depth without making it gleam. The cross-section reveals solid wood with a continuous grain. Such continuously ornamented mouldings are in the tradition of Baroque frames, which were designed to enclose the picture within a dynamic, repeating form. We recommend it for oil paintings by the Old Masters, for history and landscape paintings, as well as for still lifes with a dark background. It looks at its best when the painting itself is rich and deep in colour – then the frame and the subject complement each other perfectly. |
