The Margaret picture frame is a wonderful link within a collection: warm in colour, clean in form and vibrant enough to bridge the gap between older and newer artworks. Its solid wood features a two-tone finish in terracotta, rust red and reddish brown. Over this lie traces of antique gold, speckled areas and a brushed, finely grooved surface. In shifting light, these lines stand out at times more boldly, at others more subtly. The 40 mm wide and 29 mm high profile rises on the outside in a narrow curve and then slopes down towards the picture in a broad, gentle cove. A golden inner edge finishes off the frame and captures the light directly on the subject. This gives the picture a bright transition, whilst the darker reddish-brown lends it a calm depth. This combination of coloured frame and gold edge is reminiscent of frames in the tradition of Italian Renaissance and Baroque collections. Such graduated profiles served to visually detach paintings from the wall and draw the eye inwards. We particularly recommend ‘Margaret’ for landscapes in earthy tones or still lifes featuring warm-coloured fruits and vessels. It looks at its best when ochre, muted green or deep red appear in the picture.
