When we pick up the Juliette, the first thing we notice is just how much ornamentation is packed into a width of just 26 millimetres. The cross-section reveals solid wood with a continuous grain, light in colour and fine-grained, neatly milled towards the rebate. The profile rises gently from the visible edge, curves outwards towards the outer edge and features three staggered bands of ornamentation there: on the outside, a frieze of heart-shaped, closed leaf arches; in the centre, a scale pattern with dotted centres; and on the inside, a delicately braided beaded band. Such rows of small ornaments originate from Baroque furniture and frame carving, where circumscribing friezes guided the eye along the edge of the picture rather than distracting it. The antique gold gilding rests on a light, almost chalky ground, which remains in the recesses and reveals the relief structure. The gold is denser on the ridges, so the pattern glints in oblique light and settles again in the shade. Warm reddish tones also shimmer in the recesses. We are happy to recommend the ‘Juliette’ for 18th-century portrait painting or floral still lifes. It is shown to its best advantage in small to medium-sized formats, where its delicate detail is not lost.
