The Josi picture frame combines solid wood with a multi-layered, vividly patinated surface. Rust-red shimmers through black and anthracite, whilst brushed and speckled traces of antique silver stand out more clearly depending on how the light falls. We find the silver inner edge particularly beautiful: it creates a subtle halo of light directly around the image and clearly separates it from the darker layers of colour. The 40-millimetre-wide and 29-millimetre-high profile is constructed as a flat groove. From the slightly raised outer edge, the grooved surface slopes gently down towards the picture opening, before the narrow silver edge forms the finish. This design follows in the tradition of historic grooved frames, whose inward-sloping profiles visually gathered the painting and drew the eye towards the subject. The longitudinal grooves reinforce this effect and allow the silver, red and anthracite to interact in varied ways when viewed in raking light. We particularly recommend Josi for atmospheric landscapes or portraits featuring earthy, dark colour tones. In a traditional Hamburg flat, it looks wonderful above a dark wooden chest of drawers; in a loft, it complements steel and exposed brickwork. In a country house, too, it blends well with linen, ceramics and warm wood tones. It looks at its best when the surroundings subtly echo its rust or silver hues.
