Painting Frames "Inge" |

| The ‘Inge’ picture frame combines sombre tranquillity with delicately placed light. Its solid wooden profile is 20 mm wide and 18 mm high. The gently rounded central surface curves between a golden outer edge and the inner edge, which is also framed in gold. This creates a clear gradation: on the outside, a narrow band of light; then the anthracite to black-brown depth with a warm brown undertone; and finally, a light line directly against the picture. The brushed and patinated surface allows the antique gold to shimmer differently depending on the viewing angle. Small, darker marks and irregularities enhance the antique look without making the slender profile appear heavy. The dark central area draws the eye, whilst the inner gold edge sets the motif apart from the frame like a delicate threshold of light. Inge is reminiscent of dark-set, partially gilded gallery frames from the 17th and 18th centuries. Such contrasts were particularly favoured for giving portraits, still lifes and landscapes a sense of depth and for extending the warm tones of the picture. We particularly recommend this frame for atmospheric landscapes by Caspar David Friedrich or for Baroque still lifes with deep shadows. It looks at its best when the picture itself features brown, ochre, muted green or individual light accents. |
