| What we particularly like about Gretl is the interplay between the cool silver tone and the warm, reddish-golden traces along the outer edge. The subtle patina and the small dark spots give the surface a hint of old, lovingly preserved frames, without claiming to have a history of actual age. The solid wood moulding features a wide, gently moulded front: from the raised, rounded outer edge, it slopes down towards the picture and ends in a narrow, light-coloured inner edge. This moulding gently draws the eye inwards. Its shape is reminiscent of moulded 19th-century picture frames, which set landscapes and portraits spatially apart from the wall. The dark, similarly recessed outer side reinforces this sense of depth. Fine lines run along the strip on the silver-coloured surface. Its brushed finish diffuses the light in delicate streaks; above the curve, bright reflections alternate with softer shades of grey. It is precisely these subtle gradations that we find so appealing. We are happy to recommend Gretl for atmospheric landscapes with silvery skies or for understated portraits in shades of grey and earth tones. It looks at its best when the picture provides a touch of calm to counterbalance its textured surface. The result is a frame that exudes warmth, depth and a subtle reminder of bygone interior design styles. |
