| To us, Filippa gives the impression of a find from a quiet Cornice workshop in Milan: chalk dust in the air, sample strips on the wall, and outside, the muffled clatter of the tram. The frame is made of solid wood and comes in light oak, cream, silver and antique silver. Its brushed, finely grooved surface is irregularly speckled and patinated. As the light changes, the cool silver sections stand out, then the warm cream tones take centre stage. The 40 mm wide and 29 mm high profile is carefully stepped. Between a narrow outer edge and the silver inner edge lies a broad, gently recessed central section. This structure is reminiscent of Italian Renaissance ‘cassetta’ frames, in which a calm frieze lay between two bordering mouldings. Such frames often accompanied panel paintings and devotional images. In the case of Filippa, the gently sloping shape gently draws the eye inwards, whilst the grooved inner edge frames the picture with a delicate halo of light. We particularly recommend Filippa for portraits in muted tones or light Italian landscapes. The frame is shown to its best advantage when the painting features off-white tones, ochre, cool blue or subdued green. In such cases, the patina does not appear as a decorative addition, but rather as a subtle echo of the painting itself. |
