Painting Frames "Filipina" |
| • Serie: Bilbo • Width: 47mm • Height: 35mm |
| Some frames look as though they’ve been taken straight off the shelf in a Cornice workshop in Milan, where the light falls at an angle through dusty windows – the Filipina is one of them. We like it for its understated grandeur: 47 mm wide, 35 mm high, solid wood with a continuous grain along the cut edge, open-pored and light. The profile is a flat groove that slopes gently inwards from the visible edge and only rises again just before the rebate edge. Such hollow-chamfered profiles stem from the Italian panel painting tradition – the hollow guides the eye into the picture like a funnel whilst simultaneously creating distance from the wall. Inside and out, two narrow dark-gold decorative edges frame the profile; the mitre joints are neatly butt-jointed. The surface is the centrepiece: a light golden hue with fine grooves, overlaid with silvery-grey veils, warm golden flecks and dark speckles. In oblique light, the lustre shifts, at times cool, at times honey-warm – a vintage look that appears as though it has weathered the decades. We recommend it for atmospheric landscapes and Italian veduta painting. It looks its best in paintings featuring muted earth tones, warm light and soft transitions. |
