The Adi picture frame illustrates particularly clearly why a frame is more than just a boundary. Its 40 mm wide and 29 mm high solid wood profile slopes gently towards the picture in a concave moulding. This design follows in the tradition of historic cove-moulded frames, which were intended to set paintings apart from their surroundings whilst simultaneously drawing the eye inwards. The narrow, slightly protruding inner edge forms the final transition to the subject. In terms of colour, Adi combines light blue and turquoise blue with light silver. The wide surface is finely grooved, brushed, speckled and subtly patinated. As a result, the silver does not appear smooth and reflective, but rather vibrant: raised areas catch the light, whilst recesses remain cooler and more subdued. The silver inner edge channels this play of light directly onto the picture. In this way, the frame picks up on the colours of the artwork and deliberately influences how we perceive its atmosphere. We particularly recommend ‘Adi’ for light coastal scenes by William Turner or blue-green water-lily motifs by Claude Monet. It looks at its best when water, sky or silvery reflections of light feature in the subject. That is why it is a popular choice here for pictures with a tranquil, airy colour palette.
