Surrealistic

The art movement of surrealism emerged around 1920 in France. Surrealism was a revolutionary movement, a new way of looking at things.

Writers and artists moved all that is not to be grasped by the human mind and slumbers in the depths of the unconscious in the center. It was the connection of the imagined and the perceived reality which fascinated the surrealists. The aim was to break the existing rules and common perceptions and to suspend the laws of logic and reason. Surreality is the dissolution of the opposites of dream and reality into an absurd reality, into something unreal. The motifs in surrealist paintings often seem incongruous or to behave unnaturally, like the famous deliquescent clocks. Surrealism is meant to express the unconscious and supernatural, fantastic and absurd. The artist follows his spontaneous inspiration. The unconscious is said to be able to express itself without control when shapes and colors are put on paper. The precursor of surrealism is Dadaism, which stands for a playful and absurd style. Both art styles are about breaking the norms of fine arts and overthrowing old hierarchies.

The first painter of surrealism was Max ernst. He had embraced still painting and Dadaism and invented some new painting techniques and automatic writing. Most people also know Salvador Dalí, who created some delusional paintings, like his famous melting clocks or burning giraffes. And although Hieronymus Bosch lived long before the founding of Surrealism, his works can also be assigned to this art movement. For he moved like no other on the border between paradise and hell and created a bizarre world of pleasure and horror.
