In the dense fog of art history looms the figure of Pierre Hubert Subleyras, a French painter whose work marked the transition from the late Baroque to the early era of Neoclassicism. Born in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard on November 25, 1699, Subleyras was not only a resident but an active player on the colorful stage of the European art scene. However, the date of his death, May 28, 1749, represents only the physical conclusion of a career whose intellectual radiance continues to the present day - a presence that is expressed in each of our carefully reproduced art prints. Subleyras' journey to mastery began when he won the prestigious Grand Prix of the French Academy in 1728, a triumph that opened the gates to further training in Rome, the vibrant metropolis of art. There he left a lasting impression with his depiction of Christ's visit to the house of Simon the Pharisee, a masterpiece that earned him membership in the famous Accademia di San Luca artists' guild.
Cardinal Valenti Gonzaga recognized Subleyras' talent and secured him the commission for the work "Saint Basil and Emperor Valens", which was later realized as an impressive mosaic in St. Peter's Basilica. His ability to capture the drama of Saint Camillo De Lellis rescuing the sick in the Hospital of the Holy Spirit is a testament to his deep understanding of the human condition. Subleyras' virtuosity is also evident in his portraits, particularly his depiction of Pope Benedict XIV and Cardinal Valenti Gonzaga. His portraiture was so highly regarded that the Pope himself commissioned two large paintings - "The Marriage of Saint Catherine" and "The Ecstasy of Saint Camilla." These were later exhibited in his private rooms. Beyond his religious and portrait work, Subleyras revealed a unique individuality in his genre paintings, and his illustrations of La Fontaine and Boccaccio testify to his profound modernity. Exhausted by the intense work, Subleyras attempted a change of location to Naples, but returned to Rome for his final months.
