Born in 1891, English artist Mark Gertler came from a Jewish-Polish family. Gertler is considered one of the key figures of British art of the early 20th century. Even as a child, he showed great talent for drawing. As a 17-year-old Gertler could enroll as a student thanks to a scholarship from the Jewish Education Aid Society at the prestigious Slade School of Art in London, where he studied a total of four years. At the art school, he met the artists Paul Nash , Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Christopher Nevinson and Dora Carrington know. Previously, he had taken evening classes at Regent Street School and had to earn his additional wages as a simple worker in a workshop for stained glass windows.

In the course of the 1910s, Gertler's initial academic and classical painting style developed into a more personal and almost post-impressionist style. He painted with bright colors. He simplified and abstracted his figures and objects more and more in the course of his artistic career. In 1920, Gertler fell ill with tuberculosis and had to spend a lot of time in hospitals. Nevertheless, he succeeded in the great commercial success. From the beginning of his art studies, the talented painter has won several art awards, a two-year Slade scholarship, and a scholarship from the British Institute. The prolific Gertler was involved in several exhibitions, including in 1914 with the artist John Currie in the Chenil Galleries.

Gertler lived and worked mainly in London. He also made frequent trips to the city of Paris. The many stays in the sanatorium did not stop the ambitious young man from painting on. In the Banchory Sanatorium near Aberdeen, where he had to spend a lot of time, he painted the trees in front of his patient room. In addition to his career as a freelance artist, he worked from 1931 as a professor at the Westminster School of Art to supplement his income. Toward the end of his creative career, Gertler primarily painted nudes in a neoclassical manner, as well as still life of a cubist nature. Even in financially difficult times, Gertler could count on the support of his loyal patrons, including JB Priestley and Aldous Huxley. His physical and mental powers, however, disappeared due to his chronic and severe illness. The two world wars he witnessed made the sensitive pacifist and conscientious objector too hard to deal with. Gertler committed suicide in 1939 due to emotional and financial problems at just 38 years. © Meisterdrucke
