Isaac Robert Cruikshank was an English illustrator and caricaturist. He went down in history as one of the founders of comics with his amusing pictures. Cruikshank's illustrations are often characterized by speech bubbles and a narrative style. These characteristics, coupled with humorous scenes and vivid coloring, give the illustrations almost the character of a cartoon.
However, his life was not always as enjoyable as his artistic work. Isaac Robert Cruikshank grew up in the southeast of England with his much better known brother, George Cruikshank, who also did illustrations and caricatures for books. The brothers practiced the narrative component in their pictures at a very early age, writing their own plays in their childhood. They then performed these together with their friend Edmund Kean, who later became a celebrated actor and played plays by Shakespeare. The two brothers had a very wild side and took part in boxing and cock fights and spent their time in taverns. Isaac Robert Cruikshank first pursued a career in the military and got the position of an officer in the East India Company. During this time he worked on a ship called Perseverance. It was on this ship that Isaac Robert Cruikshank and the captain clashed. As a result, the captain left Cruikshank behind on the island of St. Helena, in the middle of the South Atlantic. But Cruikshank managed to return to London in 1806. His arrival came as a great surprise for everybody, specially for his family, as they had actually been informed that Cruikshank had died.
After his return Cruikshank started working as an illustrator. He often did illustrations for the sequel to books that his brother had illustrated years earlier and which became famous. The Cruikshank brothers occasionally worked together, such as for the illustration of a series called London Characters. Robert Cruikshank did some of his most relevant illustrations for Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote. At the age of 66, Isaac Robert Cruikshank unfortunately died of bronchitis.
