Charles François Jalabert

Nonclassified artists   •   Wikipedia: Charles François Jalabert

The second half of the 19th century was a time of cultural awakening in Paris. Into this lively vortex stepped an artist whose works captured the pulse of the era - Charles François Jalabert. Born in the picturesque city of Nîmes in 1819, Jalabert quickly became a fixture in the higher circles of Parisian society, his presence a valued asset in Madame Sabatier's salon. A master of the academic style, Jalabert left posterity numerous works of imperishable beauty. Today, some of them adorn the walls of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes, a venerable art print treasure house where the tradition of academic painting is kept alive.

One of his most famous works, "The Plague of Thebes," is a stunning oil painting that captures the dramatic narrative of the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles. In the story, Thebes is ravaged by a devastating plague, seen as punishment for the sins of King Oedipus. Jalabert's depiction of this tragic tale and other important works such as "Oedipus and Antigone" are now an integral part of the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes.

Jalabert received his education at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and worked mostly in Paris, where he lived until his death in 1901. His artistic achievements were widely recognized and he was awarded the Prix de Rome and made an Officer of the Legion of Honor, among other honors.

The vivid beauty of his works is captured in each of our art prints, a tribute to his unparalleled influence on academic painting. Each fine art print, a perfect reproduction, stands as a testament to Jalabert's masterful craftsmanship and our unwavering dedication to quality and precision.
