Bernhad van Orley was a Flemish painter and one of the most famous representatives of the Flemish and Dutch Renaissance. He was probably born between 1487 and 1492 in the city of Brussels. Not much is known about his origins, only that his father came from Luxembourg, was also a painter and tapestry designer and had another son named Everard. Also the career of the artist lies in the dark. Some sources claim that he could have enjoyed his training with the painter Raphael in Rome, but this is unproven. All that is known is that Bernhard of Orlay was later a court artist to the Habsburg rulers and also some sort of commissioner of the arts in his hometown.
The artist had a large workshop in Brussels with many employees and was very productive. He is said to have spent most of his time preparing and designing his works, leaving the detailed execution of many of his works to his employees. He also not only painted pictures, but also created the motifs of tapestries and stained glass windows on a large scale. His paintings mostly showed religious motifs, but he also painted many portraits of, among others, Charles V, Emperor of Austria, King of Spain and the Netherlands, and Margaret of Austria. In the tapestries and windows, hunting and battle scenes, everyday scenes and allegories predominated alongside biblical scenes.
In his early years Bernard of Orlay painted in the style of the Dutch masters such as Jan van Eick and Rogier van der Weyden and their followers, later an Italian influence came into his works. With his appointment as official court painter in 1518, the artist became famous throughout Europe and very wealthy. His workshop became the most important in the city of Brussels. He had a great many pupils who later made a great name for themselves. Among them are Pieter Coecke Aelst, Jan Vermeyen, Pieter de Kempeneer and Michiel Coxcie.
From 1512 the artist was married to Agnes Seghers. When she died in 1539 he married again His second wife was called Catherina Hellinckx. With the first wife the painter had 9 children. His four sons all became painters as well. Bernhard van Orsay died in Brussels in January 1941. © Meisterdrucke
