Nonclassified artists   •   Wikipedia: Alexei Harlamov

Alexei Harlamov was born a serf in a small village on the Volga River in Russia. When Alexei Harlamov was ten years old, his parents were able to regain his freedom. With his freedom won, he now had the opportunity to study at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. After a few years of study, he received the Silver Medal of Arts for his drawings. After his studies he also wins a Gold Medal of Arts for his works. With a scholarship abroad, Alexei Harlamov had the opportunity to travel through Europe and eventually studied for a year in a studio in Paris. The Academy in St. Petersburg had commissioned him to copy a painting by the famous painter Rembrandt. He then worked for almost a year to reproduce the painting. At the World Exhibition in Paris he painted a portrait of Alexander Fedorovich Onegin and received a medal for it. Alexei Harlamov has become famous for his portraits of women and children. One of his paintings was auctioned in 2008 for a million dollars.

At the beginning of his career Alexei Harlamov painted different religious subjects and many different genres. He focused primarily on copying well-known paintings by great artists. However, he was able to establish himself by painting portraits, such as of Prince Demidoff and Tsar Alexander II. However, informal portraits were among his most popular subjects. One famous painting is that of the peasant girl, which he painted for her innocence and beauty. Here the flower is considered a symbol of the innocence of youth. Alexei Harlamov was particularly interested in facial expressions and the emotions associated with them, such as the girl in the white veil with a pensive look and charming manner. Today, the works of Alexei Harlamov are exhibited in the Museum of St. Petersburg and the Gallery of Moscow. His talent for portraits was highly praised even in his younger years. Among his inspirations were his dealings with children and young girls, who occupy a special place in his works. In addition, the exquisite charcoal drawing of a young girl who shyly lowers her eyes and almost touches her chest with her hand is very famous. Especially the lines of charcoal and the way of technique show the talent and craft of Alexei Harlamov. This portrait is a wonderful example of the characteristics of his works. The somewhat reserved character is evident in many of his paintings, which highlight his incomparable style. His paintings are characterized by the delicate, careful and soft handling in the depiction of the faces. Alexei Harlamov was fascinated by the aesthetics and natural beauty, which he depicts with brilliance in his paintings.
