Suprematism

In December 1915 an exhibition with the enigmatic title 0,10 opened in Petrograd, today's Saint Petersburg, and one picture hung where in Russian houses the icon hangs: high up in the corner of the room. It was the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich, meant as zero point and new beginning of painting at once. Suprematism he called this art, after the Latin supremus, for freed from depicting, painting was to attain its highest rank.

Around Malevich a circle quickly gathered in which women set the tone. Lyubov Popova built her compositions like architectural fields of force, Olga Rozanova found her way to colour chords of great independence before she died young in 1918, and Alexandra Exter carried the new formal language into stage design and book art, from Kyiv to Paris.

In 1919 Malevich went to the art school of Vitebsk and in the following year, with the group UNOVIS founded there, the Affirmers of the New Art, made it the laboratory of the movement; the young Ilya Chashnik was among the students who carried Suprematist forms onto porcelain and architectural models. In the 1930s Soviet cultural policy forced the end; what has remained is one of the most radical pictorial ideas of the century.
