Figurative art

What holds this collection together is no period and no technique, but a subject: the human figure and the world in which it moves. The term figurative art became necessary only when abstraction had become the norm of the modern age; since then it has designated all those who kept faith with the human figure, across genres and centuries.

Three quite different lives mark out the arc. The sculptor Camille Claudel fought in Paris for recognition beside and against her teacher Auguste Rodin and formed figure groups of urgent movement, among them the group The Waltz of 1893; since the 1980s her work has been newly discovered and today counts as an independent contribution to the sculpture of the turn of the century. The Dane Dankvart Dreyer belonged to the Golden Age of Danish painting and was above all a painter of quiet Danish landscapes, a proof of how widely this collecting rubric is conceived. And the draughtsman Georges Pilotell supplied caricatures and portraits of the insurgents during the Paris Commune of 1871, art in the service of the hour, quickly drawn and quickly printed. Sculpture, landscape, printmaking: the recognisable is here less a style than a connecting thread.
