Biedermeier

Between the Congress of Vienna of 1815 and the revolution of 1848 the middle classes of Central Europe lived under a watchful censorship, and art withdrew to where nobody read along: into the parlour, the garden, the family circle. Pictures of these decades are mostly small, carefully painted and destined for private walls. The room picture, which shows nothing but an inhabited interior, became a genre of its own; Georg Friedrich Kersting had found the tone for it early on.

Vienna set the tone. Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller insisted, against the academy, on study before nature and painted light like scarcely a second painter of his time; Peter Fendi recorded family life in delicate watercolours. And Josef Nikolaus Kriehuber portrayed half of Vienna in lithographs, from court official to musician, while Franz Schrotzberg served the nobility with smoothly polished likenesses. Even the writer Adalbert Stifter took up the brush, his small landscapes are sought-after rarities today.

Outside Vienna this art found other notes. Carl Spitzweg made the eccentrics of the small towns his theme in Munich, painting his most famous picture, the Poor Poet under his attic window, in 1839. Ludwig Richter filled books and prints with domestic idylls, and the Norwegian Adolph Tidemand depicted the folk life of his homeland from Düsseldorf. In 1848 the quiet time was over, yet its pictures of ordered life kept their public.
