Figurative art

Whenever contemporary art depicts people, living beings or even objects, there is talk of figurative art. Throughout the 20th century, figurative art seemed to be engaged in a duel with abstract art and was more than once declared dead.

If at the beginning of this century the focus was still on figures that did not aim to reflect reality - as was the case with Pablo Picasso, for example - a break came with the First World War. Suffering, death and ugliness found their way into figurative painting. Even then, various directions existed in parallel. What they had in common, however, was that what was depicted referred to something actual in the world, which the artist adapted to his own sensibilities in the form of representation.

Over the decades, new styles were added. One of them was Pop Art. Probably its most famous representative, Andy Warhol, set himself a monument with his portrait of Marilyn Monroe and the image of a can of soup. Hyperrealism, which emerged around the 1970s, is also one of the myriad expressions of figurative painting with its imitation of photography.

At present, there are also numerous artists who have devoted themselves to figurative art. In Germany, a combination of Pop Art and Socialist Realism is predominant, as Neo Rauch shows in his paintings.
