Art print on Canvas glossy, 48cm x 68cm, stretched on stretcher.
Egon Schiele's career was short, intense and surprisingly productive. Before he succumbed to the flu in 1918 at the age of 28, he created more than three hundred oil paintings and several thousand works on paper. The human figure gave Schiele his strongest motive for paintings as well as for drawings. The self-portraits of his large series of watercolors and paintings, which he created between 1910 and 1918, are burning, psychologically complex images.

Thus Schiele draws a self-portrait in Eros (1911), in which he looks ill, whereby his swollen, red penis occupies a large part of the frame. The emaciated, tormented figure of the artist, bony and angular, balks with an inner tension. Schiele stares in puzzlement, his big, dark eyes seem exhausted, his mouth closed, and his right hand touches his penis with his index finger. The color is limited to shades of brown and gray, with the mouth and genitals colored red. It is a deliberate reference to his alleged degeneration. The true decay, he seems to say, is not in his art but in the world. Schiele's works reflect his time, and to censor him means to ignore both the story and the diabolical desires that we all have. By putting these dark desires into the open, Schiele helped them to free them from their power. © Meisterdrucke
