My name is Martin Schüler and I paint cuddly toys. In autumn 2018 my plush cat Gondula told me in a delirious moment to paint cuddly toys. What sounds crazy in the first moment developed into a serious passion. I painted one animal after the other and after only three quarters of a year I had my first exhibitions and regularly published art books. Several series of my works were created. Cuddly toys symbolise closeness, warmth and security - basic needs of our life. Signs of a carefree childhood. I have neither an artistic education nor any other previous knowledge in painting. As a child I hated art lessons because I was always told what art looked like. As if working with a brush was some insipid German norm. It was only when I accepted that I could not create a masterpiece in the sense of straight lines or perfect composition that I began to accept my supposed faults for what they really are: A special approach. I make a virtue of my ignorance and my own style. I teach myself everything myself and learn by trial and error. This comes across and is real. This creates pictures that touch. My work is characterised by daring colours, simplified forms and partly artificial, sometimes even two-dimensional spaces. I call my art Cuddle Art. Touch - that's what I'm all about. I don't want a prize for great craftsmanship. The established art is too intellectually highbrow and too perfect for me. I am interested in transporting ideas and feelings. I want to be an antipole to the present world. Even critics are entitled to incomparability. © Meisterdrucke
